Background for this topic.

Leak is the unauthorized disclosure or exposure of information to people or systems not meant to receive it. It may be deliberate or accidental and can involve personal data, credentials, API keys, source code, trade secrets, or internal documents. A leak can result from theft and publication, an employee sending data to the wrong recipient, or an exposed cloud storage bucket, database, log, repository, or backup. The term describes the exposure, not necessarily how attackers obtained it; reporting may refer to both confirmed disclosure and suspected exposure.

Security teams should establish what data was accessible, to whom, and for how long, while distinguishing evidence of access from mere exposure. Exposed passwords, tokens, and keys should be revoked or rotated quickly, and affected systems checked for reuse or further access. Personal or regulated data may trigger privacy and reporting obligations, while leaked proprietary material can require legal and threat-intelligence monitoring. Prevention includes least-privilege access, secret scanning, safe sharing controls, encryption where appropriate, and monitoring for misconfigured public resources.

Lessons Learned from CISA’s Recent GitHub Leak

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued a postmortem on a data leak in which a contractor published dozens of internal CISA credentials -- including AWS Govcloud keys -- in a public GitHub repository for almost six months before being notified by KrebsOnSecurity. Experts say the gaps identified in the agency's initial response provide important lessons that all security teams should absorb.

NightmareEclipse Says Mitigation Can Exhaust Disk Space, Crash AppsMicrosoft's patch for CVE-2026-50656, known as RoguePlanet, has sparked fresh criticism after researcher NightmareEclipse alleged the mitigation can exhaust disk space, crash applications and leak memory, extending a months-long dispute over Microsoft's handling of multiple zero-day disclosures.

A major credential leak spurred the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to strengthen protections for its sensitive materials, improve how researchers can report agency vulnerabilities and develop plans for similar incidents, the agency said in a forensic report released Thursday. The blog post outlines CISA’s response to the leak that the researcher who discovered it […] The post CISA looks to remedy ailments from big May credential leak appeared first on CyberScoop.

Ransomware remains above 1,400 attacks yearly since 2023. Qilin leads in 2026, while the U.S. remains the main target. Ransomnews has independently confirmed 9,291 ransomware attacks worldwide between January 2018 and July 2026, tracking incidents only when verified through victim disclosures, regulatory filings, official statements, or credible press reporting. Leak-site listings alone don’t qualify, operators […]

Researchers Urge Organizations to Rotate Credentials and Review Audit LogsThreat actor 888 claims it stole Accenture source code and cloud credentials, prompting researchers to warn that any exposed Azure tokens, encryption keys or DevOps secrets could enable follow-on intrusions and downstream supply-chain attacks even as Accenture says operations remain unaffected.

runZero found 7 flaws in FatFs, a filesystem used in IoT and embedded devices. Bugs can cause memory corruption, crashes, or data leaks via crafted storage. Cybersecurity firm runZero has disclosed seven vulnerabilities in FatFs, a compact open-source library that lets embedded devices read and write FAT and exFAT formatted storage, the same formats used […]

Researchers at Shandong University have shown a fast new way to pull data off computers that are cut off from every network. The technique, called TrojPix, tweaks on-screen pixels in ways the eye cannot see, so that the video cable carrying them radiates a faint radio signal a nearby receiver can decode

A U.S. government agency paid $1M to Kairos, a group focused on data theft and extortion rather than ransomware, Ransom-ISAC reports. A new case study from Ransom-ISAC reconstructs a complete data-extortion incident involving a U.S. government body and a threat actor called Kairos, using a leaked negotiation transcript and blockchain tracing of the ransom payment.
