Cybersecurity researchers are calling attention to a new campaign where threat actors are abusing FortiGate Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) appliances as entry points to breach victim networks.  The activity involves the exploitation of recently disclosed security vulnerabilities or weak credentials to extract configuration files containing service account credentials and network topology

SonicWall said that a threat actor has accessed files containing encrypted credentials and configuration data for all customers who have used its cloud backup service

Hackers Accessed Backup Firewall Preference FilesFirewall maker SonicWall is telling customers to reset credentials after hackers stole firewall configuration backup files stored in its cloud service. Hackers launched brute force attacks against servers storing backup files. They stole configuration data of roughly 5% of the install base.

Suspected state-sponsored hackers have been exploiting a zero-day vulnerability in Palo Alto Networks firewalls tracked as CVE-2024-3400 since March 26, using the compromised devices to breach internal networks, steal data and credentials. [...]
